POST*Net,
the UPU's Global
Postal Telecommunications Network,
combines all the tools needed to transfer
electronic information between Posts,
airlines, carriers, custom authorities,
security agencies or any other transport
and distributions organization anywhere
in the world.
At the origin of POST*Net was
a Joint-Venture agreement
with SITA (Société Internationale
de Télécommunications Aéronautiques).
A major difference between
POST*Net and other commercial or non-commercial
networks is the fact that POST*Net
was established to serve the postal community.
Its main objective is to provide
a community service. Another major
advantage is the fact that
the postal community owns POST*Net
and can therefore determine
its costs and influence its evolution.
POST*Net
provides Posts with a competitive
advantage to face future challenges
arising from competition and new
technologies, including:
The
economies
of scale achieved through
advantageous, centrally negotiated
rates. A single entity, namely
the UPU's Postal Technology Centre,
manages
and co-ordinates the network implementation
on behalf of all Posts.
The
provision
of a consistent and transparent
service to Posts. The management
of existing and new connections
and the monitoring of the overall
network performance are assured
by the UPU, thus relieving
Posts from incurring related administrative
and operational costs.
The
flexible
network infrastructure
of POST*Net can meet the specific
needs of each postal enterprise
while ensuring an adapted growth
path to meet their expansion requirements
in a non-disruptive manner.
